New Zealand: Auckland

Finally after 4 days of road trip in the North of the North Island (yes I know it’s complicated), I was back in Auckland hoping to solve my Australian visa issues. This come-back in this city was not enjoyable for me. The city is big, dirty and rainy. Auckland has been build in the middle of a harbour which puts this city in the centre of large area of water. The winter climate is really shitty; I believe it wasn’t raining only 2 days over 11 days. I didn’t really think it could be possible outside of UK. This country had been colonized by the British, this was not for nothing (lol).

In brief Monday, I went to the Australian consulate where they gave me an email of the department to contact. Then after a couple of emails, I received at last an answer. Thursday night, I got the verdict: I need to pass an X-ray and a medical visit before a get my visa… well. I had only 3 more days in NZ and that was impossible to do it because I had my plane ticket for the 10th of July.

This week in Auckland was one of the worst in my life. The stress of Uni results and the visa one drove me nuts and made the wait to go back even harder; especially in a city where I knew anyone and where it ws raining everyday.

Finally I took this week to try to understand the people attraction for this city or this country. I crossed the city back and forth looking for something interesting. The Sky Tower and the marina were in my opinion 2 things to discover. The first one is the highest building in Auckland and reaches more than 300m at its highest point. The second is the largest marina I’ve even seen in my life. Otherwise in strange thing, Kiwano is not bad at all (right). It seems to be a melon but I’m not sure (lol). Then we can buy alcohol in supermarkets and the cost of living is exorbitant.

To conclude about NZ I would say that I saw all negative aspects, and I would like to travel in the South Island in order to discover the advantages of this country: great landscapes, nature, mountains and skiing. Don’t forget the great landscapes of “Lord of the rings” which had been filmed into the National Park in the South of NZ. But I will stay on an idea that this country is still a developing country trying to civilize little by little. The cultural and sociologic choc isn’t easy to handle: moving the Stone Age to our Modern age in 200 years at the place of 2000. It give something to ponder over.

New Zealand: Jour 4 | Day 4

Friday we went down to Auckland from almost the top North of the island. The journey was at least 350kms. It was 8:15am and Sean told me we should be back in Auckland in early afternoon.

On the way, we stopped at Kawakawa to take a coffee and to take some pictures of public toilets (right). These ones have been made in mosaic, and I don’t want to piss because I did not want to damage them.

Second stop was done at the Whangarei falls (left). Then whereas Auckland became closer and closer, we stopped at Waiwera Beach 5min to watch windsurfers and kitesurfers.

Finally Sean dropped me at my backpacker hostel, it was 5pm. We did the journey in 8H45 taking 4 breaks (approximately 1H30). Big big thanks to Sean and his parents for the trip and for their kindness.

Me voici donc de retour à Auckland… Here am I, back in Auckland

New Zealand: Jour 3 | Day 3

Early wake up to visit Pahia and the Bay of Islands, we decided to take the ferry to go on the other side of the road as the road was closed. This took us 10min to cross the bay with the Fast Ferry, and we disembarked at Russell, a seaside village situated between the Pacific Ocean and the Bay of Islands. It’s a famous place for yatchmen and tourists, but it was empty of people because it was off-peak season. We climbed until the top of the hill to admire the splendid view over the bay (on the top). Then I found a print-store which provides Internet access to check my emails. The owner asked me if I was happy with the Internet service, I said I was, but poor guy! I didn’t tell him he was behind the times with his Internet.

Back to Pahia, Alex left us to go quickly to the South, she had only 3 days left before she had to fly back to the States. Then Sean drove us to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds which is a historical and symbolic place of the recognition of the Maori and new immigrants’ rights in NZ, and also the recognition of the British sovereignty over these lands. In the museum, I discovered the chief Maori war canoe and the house where the treaty had been signed (below).

Then we went up (North) to Kerikeri to see The Stone Store which was one of the first houses built in NZ. This house had been built in 1819 by missionaries then it had several uses. Nowadays it had been restored and it served as an evidence of history. Then we visited (just on the other side) the location where the Maoris lived 200 years ago. Houses, storage and bark house showed us how these people were living before the British came (right)

From Kerikeri we moved North passing by Matauri Bay (below) to Ninety Miles Beach on the West coast where we slept.

New Zealand: Jour 2 | Day 2

After a good night of sleep, some pictures and a good shower, we took the road to the North. On the way, we did a breakfast stop (british breakfast: 2 eggs, bacon, sausages, tomatoes, potatoes and bread) and I used this time to check my visa process, but it didn’t change. I still need to wait…

After 50kms, we stopped at the base of a peak in the middle of the NZ countryside; this one gave me the opportunity to take panoramic pictures (right).

Then we continued to drive until an age-old massive rock. The mobile home’s size was tiny compared to this big rock (left).

The discovery of the Northland continued with always so much green landscapes and sheep on either sides of the road. Moreover the road was so bad with zigzag and bumps that it made me sick, my stomach did not handle the mobile home’s suspensions. (It needs a sport chassis, it would be more fun). I felt asleep to wake up when we arrived at the lake “Kai Iwi” (below).

Normalement c’est écrit « Most Wanted » !!! (a gauche). But we moved quickly in direction of the East coast. On the way we stopped at an information center and I read a sign which made me laugh. Normally it’s written “Most wanted” !!! (left). The guide showed us the way to the biggest Kauri of the region. So we drove to the Waipoua Forest to marvel at “Tane Mahuta” (below). This tree forces the respect. Its size is impressive; I was so small beside it. On the way back, I noticed a sign of the department of conversation (right): Be careful “Kiwi Zone”. I would like to see one. I was wondering if it’s eatable (I’m joking). Then we drove until Pahia on the East coast to take a rest for the night.

New Zealand: Jour 1 | Day 1

Monday 25th, I am on board of the flight 188 to Auckland (NZ). The arrival is in 3H30, so I take this moment to show some pictures of Europe to Sean my Australian friend.

A little flashback is essential for a better understanding. Sunday evening on the way back to home from the SouthBank cinema with Estelle, we met Sean who works in the Citycat ferry that we took. It had been a long time since I didn’t see him. He told me he gonna go to NZ with his parents for his holidays. At the end of the discussion we decided to meet at the airport and to continue the tchat during the flight.

Once I had been arrived in Auckland Airport, I took the Super Shuttle to go at my backpacker in the CBD. The driver gave me the impression we’re doing 50kms. He was so slow. 23kms later, this one relieved me of 26 dollars for the journey (very well !?!). Once I fulfilled registration papers, took the key, and called Estelle, I felt asleep deeply in a room of 8 persons on the top of one creaking bunk bed.

Jour 1 | Day 1

In early hours (around 9H), I called Sean who gave me a meeting point at the aquarium if I wanted to come in road trip with him during few days. Once I arrived at the aquarium, I got on board for the road trip to the Northland.

The team was composed of Alex, Sean, his parents and I. Alex who was a US student in Brisbane has travelled 2 days with us before she took another way. Sean’s parents are funny and friendly: the old couple always trying to squabble each other.

Back to our sheeps, the road is bordered by meadows with sheeps/cows/deers. Don’t ask me why there are deer’s breeding here, I don’t know. On the other hand it’s simple for sheeps: 10 sheeps per inhabitant knowing there are 3,9 millions of inhabitants here I let you work it out…

The journey continues to the North until Matahoke where we stopped at the Kauri Museum. Kauri (agathis australis) is the bigger and the most famous tree from NZ. Some even grows underground horizontally. They can reach 4m wide and 20m high for a life expectancy of several thousand years. This tree had been at the beginning of the settlement of new immigrants in the 19’s century. At the end of the visit, the night was already there, so we moved to set up the mobile home in a caravan park. The evening ended by cards game and poker.

New-Zealand - Intro

I don’t know where to start I have so much things to tell. First I had left Brisbane Monday evening at 7pm to Auckland (New-Zealand) in order to obtain my Working Holiday Visa (WHV) which will give me the right to stay one more year in Australia. Why? Simply because my student visa is going to expire 28 days after the end of my courses: the August 28th.

The most penible is to obtain the WHV, because I need to be outside of the Australian territory to apply for the visa. New-Zealand being the closest destination and also the cheapest in term of plane tickets (AU$600), so I had decided to take one and fly to NZ.

Then, I’m waiting for my exam’s results knowing I’m not sure about the final score of my last exam. This increases even more my stress. During this time, Estelle stayed at Brisbane, and she is looking for an apartment for us. Thing not really easy when we know that my visa might be refused and I might be not able to stay in Australia if it’s happen.

To conclude, my boss at Fusion Sport is waiting for me and my status in Australian to propose me a job as my internship had been doing well. He wants to keep me for developing the European market.

Voila the current situation where I am. Everything can turn upside down from one moment to another. My return ticket is for July 10th, but I hope I will have the visa before to go back in France at the end of August…
